SOUTH FLORIDA LOOKS FOR ROAD WIN VS. SHU

February 25, 2009

Seton Hall, 5-9 in Big East and 14-12 overall, hostsd South Florida, 3-11 Big East and 8-18 overall, in a Big East conference match-up Wednesday night at the Prudential Center in Newark (NJ).

The Pirates look to return home after a road loss at St. John's Sunday evening and snap a three-game losing streak at the expense of the Bulls. After dropping their first six conference games, SHU rebounded with five straight wins to build some momentum and reach 5-6 in the Big East. It was the second straight year the Pirates have had a five-game winning streak in Big East play, the hope to make sure those are not the only five wins in the conference.

USF had a season highlight win over Marquette earlier this month. They have matched their Big East-best three conference wins by also sweeping DePaul in their home and home and now will try to get their fourth conference win tonight as they travel to Newark.

Last season the game between USF and SHU went right down to the wire with Seton Hall pulling out a 79-75 win at USF. If the Bulls are able to reverse the tables and grab a win on the road they will need Dominique Jones to carry the load offensively and also a healthy Jesus Verdejo to be a strong offensive contributor.

Despite a thin roster, SHU does possess some offensive firepower, led by shooter Jeremy Hazell and will look to push the tempo and get the Bulls into a track meet. If that gameplan is to be successful in the Big East, they will need a strong floor game from point guard Eugene Harvey, who is coming off a horrible game at St. John's. Feeling the effects of an allergic reaction, Harvey finished the game scoreless and committing five turnovers. SHU can not afford for Harvey to go into a tailspin to close out the season, similar to last season, so a bounceback game from Bobby Gonzalez's point guard is needed.

All in all, SHU has more talent than USF and should find scoring to be quite easy against the Bulls. While USF is certainly going to put forth the effort, they simply do not have the size or the depth to take advantage of the SHU shortcomings.

USF STAR GUARD 'JONES-ING' FOR RESPECT

February 21, 2009

By Zach Smart

A standout sophomore on a no longer cellar-dwelling Big East team, Dominique Jones isn't worried about ascending to star status. He doesn't care that he's not mentioned along the same lines of the surplus of top-flight Big East guards. He doesn't pay attention to stat sheets and didn't care that erupted for a career-high 35 points against West Virginia.

Individual accolades are meaningless to the chiseled 6-foot-4, 205-pound guard from Lake Wales, Fla.

Surprising people as a team, progressing on a day-to-day basis, and continuing his role as usf's do-it-all guard are first and foremost to Jones, who had 14 points, five assists, two steals, and two blocks in all 40 minutes of the Bulls' 64-50 loss to UConn at the XL Center Saturday.

"We see that we're a better team than people think and we're a better team that we show some nights," said Jones.

Read rest of article...click 'Read More' below...

Jones said as a player, he doesn't like being pegged as the scoring machine or the go-to-guy. He wants to have a hand in everything he can and make his teammates better.

"I want to do a little bit of everything. I don't want to be a scorer, I don't want to be a point guard, I don't want to be a shooting guard. I want to be a player. I want to do it all. I think that I'm kinda underrated, people say that, but that's not my main focus. My main focus is just getting the job done for my team, just going out there and playing and I feel like my glory will come."

Jones has been a veritable superman for the Bulls this season, averaging team highs in points (18.2), assists (4.0), and rebounds (5.2). He erupted for 36 points (on 12-for-16 shooting), 31 at Central Florida. He gave the West Virginia the aforementioned 35-spot and had 29 points and eight boards against Providence. A machine in Nikes, Jones is yet to play under 32 minutes in a game this season.

"I feel like our team is progressing. I feel like we take steps back sometimes, but we have to keep pushing forward and get the best out of this season. Our goal is to just be prepared for the Big East tournament, get as many wins as we can. We need to keep getting better, set history, and just keep flowing."

The Bulls shot an atrocious 9-for-31 in a first half that saw them throw up more bricks than a building that seats more than the 15,451 in attendance Saturday afternoon. They shot a woeful 21-for-65 (32.2 percent) on the game. UConn, sleepwalking up until the final 6 minutes, 15 seconds, also came to the rifle range with a supersoaker. The Huskies were 14-for-37 in the first half, allowing the Bulls to keep within striking distance throughout.

Whenever a crucial bucket was needed, Jones was the answer.

He finished a wowing dunk, plus the foul and swatted UConn's 7-foot-3 center Hasheem Thabeet in the opening minutes. He converted a backdoor cut that he got free on to an easy lay-in that cut UConn's lead to 19-14 with 4:46 remaining. Jones' corner 3-pointer sliced UConn's lead to 39-29 in the second half.

Jones would later score on back-to-back fast breaks that cut UConn's edge to just six.

It occurred when UConn forward Stanley "Sticks" Robinson tried to stretch an alley-oop into a highlight reel jam. The folly resulted in a South Florida fast break that Jones was on the receiving end of. At 11:48, Jones finished a fast break dunk that had Jim Calhoun kicking his chair and shouting "What are you doing?" so loud that even the people in the skybox could hear the exasperated Husky game general.

"We were rolling at that point," said Jones. "The main thing with us is just trying to keep it going, keep it going. We try not to let them get out to a little run like we did."

If the Bulls--who stamped a shocking, 57-56 upset win over Marquette back on Feb. 6--improve, Jones will make a little run to the Big East first team.

Jones starred at Lake Wales High and was named first team 4A all-state after averaging 21 points, 10 boards, and seven assists his senior year.

The kid is Lake Wales through and through. The facilitating guard represents the program everywhere he goes. When accidentally asked if he played at a neighboring, rival high school, Jones gave a terse response.

"Hell no!" He snapped. "Lake Wales, Lake Wales."

SOUTH FLORIDA FACES ANGRY HUSKY PACK

by Zach Smart

Jim Boeheim said it.

In a recent interview with SNY, the longtime Syracuse game general pointed out that South Florida copped their first conference win by giving Marquette--a team loaded with four standout 1,000-point scoring seniors--their first loss.

Anything can happen. In a conference filled with a buffet-line of promising talent, anyone can knock off anyone.

Heading into their matchup with UConn (24-2, 12-2) the Hasheem Thabeet phenomenon could have sent shivers down SFU's spine. But Thabeet was neutralized, significantly, on Monday night. He scored just four points and was a non-factor after getting into foul trouble during their 76-68 home loss to Pittsburgh.

The Panthers' DuJuan Blair, a sophomore strongman, took the ball to Thabeet early and often. He pounded his way into the paint. He put the ball on the deck and posted up on the 7-foot-3 mammoth of a man. He beat him to the boards and found various ways to score--putbacks, fallaway jumpers, refined back to the basket moves that Thabeet can't simulate, and so forth.

Unfortunately. South Florida does not have a Dujuan Blair on their roster. They don't even have a Kentrell Gransberry anymore. Gransberry, one of the most under-appreciated bigs in the conference last season, is playing professionally in France.

The Bulls have a 6-foot-10 center in Alex Rivas-Sanchez. Excluding games against Virginia, Notre Dame, and Marquette, the wiry big man from the Dominican Republic hasn't been much to write home about. He's averaging a meager 3.1 points and 4.3 boards in just 14.6 minutes for a squad that acknowledges the gap that was created when 2008 graduation claimed Gransberry.

Guard Dominique Jones (18.2 PPG, 4.0 APG), on the other hand, has been nothing short of a problem. We know you haven't heard much about him with the laundry-list of guards in the Big East--like Dominic James--that make headline after headline. In a guard-heavy Big East, Jones would be raved about if he didn't play for the cellar-dwelling Bulls.

Jones hung 35 on West Virginia, 29 on Providence, and 26 on DePaul. Prior to the 2008-09 campaign, Jones said a personal goal for his team would be to win every out-of-conference game. He's a realist when it comes to the talent level of the Big East and where his team stands this year.

While his wish didn't pan out--Niagara, Vanderbilt, Wright State, and Oral Roberts all had their way with SFU in the non-conference slate--Jones scored 15 points and handed out four helpers as the Bulls defeated Marquette in the upset of the century. It was South Florida's first-ever victory over a top-ten ranked opponent.

The Bulls, however, have tailed off the past two games--dropping a 10-point loss to a sleepwalking Notre Dame team before getting clubbed by a struggling Georgetown team, 65-40.

Jones is averaging just 13 points in the last two games. The kid who has yet to play under 32 minutes in a game this season--a pretty solid indicator that he's the heart and soul of this ailing program--will need to be at his best Saturday. While he's relied on to score the basketball, Jones means so much more. The 6-foot-4 guard can sky for rebounds (he turned in a 26 and 10 double-double in a nine-point loss to DePaul and combined for 17 rebounds in back-to-back games against Notre Dame and Providence.

South Florida shoots 30 percent from beyond the confines of the arc. They will not have much of a choice on Saturday, as Thabeet's presence is felt all around the key.

Just ask Seton Hall. Thabeet loves to eat up guards that take the ball to the cup and changes the trajectory of a number of shots throughout the game.

-For UConn, A.J. Price has looked more and more like the player that took the Big East by storm last season. Price is averaging 12.4 points and 4.6 dimes, but is the guy the Huskies go to in the clutch or when in need of a timely trey. The Amityville, N.Y native hit big threes and showed resolve during the Pitt loss. Price had 29 during a crucial win over Villanova last month, but his streak ways have continued.

-Jeff Adrien, newly minted member of UConn's elite 1,000 and 1,000 club has been playing the best ball of his life. Averaging a double-double with 14 and 10, Adrien should get the Huskies kick-started tomorrow.

A Look Back: In 2006, when UConn was hanging around the No.1 mark and punishing teams not named the Wildcats during the regular season, they never let a bottom feeder close to them. This was of course, in Big East action. If you remember correctly, a SUNY-Albany team sporting t-shirts with "Why Not Us?" emblazoned on the back nearly became the first team in NCAA history to upset a no.1 team as a No.16. Some people have compared this team's success to that team. So, if the Huskies are anything like that dominant 2006 squad, which was robbed by George Mason in the elite eight, they will bludgeon South Florida tomorrow. They won't waste time in the early going, as they did during their cupcake non-conference schedule. They will get after it from the get-go, get a comfortable margin, and never let up.

But don't forget, this is the 2008-2009 Big East we're talking here...To paraphrase Kevin Garnett, "ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!"

HEATH, BULLS LOOKING AT SOUTH KENT PLAYERS

February 20, 2009

Greg Auman of the St. Petersburg Times updates his USF Sports Bulletin Blog with some recruiting information on the South Florida Bulls. USF is in the mix with South Kent G/F Mike Burwell. The New Jersey Guard Will Officially Visit the Bulls next weekend. Burwell averaged 27 points per game last season at Cardinal McCarrick High School in South Amboy (NJ) and took a prep season to increase his exposure to colleges. Others showing interest, according to South Kent coach Kelvin Jefferson, include Seton Hall, Stanford, Rutgers and Penn State.

Another South Kent player, 6-foot-8, 235-pound power forward Jackie Carmichael, who has been recruited by Rutgers and Seton Hall, as well as non-majors such as Southern Illinois, South Alabama, TCU and Western Kentucky, is also on the edge of the USF radar as the spring recruiting period approaches.

BIG EAST GAME PREVIEW: GEORGETOWN @ SOUTH FLORIDA

February 18, 2009

The Georgetown slide continues as the Hoyas lost for the seventh time in eight games when they fell in overtime to Syracuse in the Dome last Saturday afternoon. While it looked like another lifeless performance as they trailed by 16 points with around 8 minutes left in the game, the Hoyas showed some life with a frantic rally that actually had a chance to win the game at the buzzer.

At 4-8 in the Big East and 13-10 overall, Georgetown can not afford any more slip ups along the way and with Marquette, Louisville and Villanova right in front of them on the schedule, this is a must-win game.

The Bulls have little to play for with a 3-9 conference record and an 8-16 overall mark. The Bulls could be motivated to win a fourth Big East game, which will be a new season best in their short Big East history. Earlier this month, they upset Marquette, 57-56, in the Sun Dome and will try and do the same to Georgetown tonight.

Here are some pregame stories and previews on tonight's match-up from the internet:

Hoyas seed Need to 'Relax and Play' (Washington Post)
Preview: USF vs. Georgetown (St. Petersburg Times)
Few Positives for Hoyas (Washington Times)

With the touhest strength of schedule rating in the nation and wins against UConn and Memphis on their resume, Georgetown remains very much in the mix for the NCAA Tournament despite their current location of 12th in the Big East standings. There is no denying the individual talent of Chris Wright, Greg Monroe, Austin Freeman, DaJuan Summers, etc on the Hoyas' roster, but their depth, size and inexperience has made things very tough in the deep, physical and mature Big East. Inconsistency was expected, but the highs have not come as often as the lows in conference play and some internal dysfunction which has spilled over at times has made this a trying season for the Hoyas.

There is still time to turn it around and it could begin tonight in South Florida. With some momentum of their comeback, even though it was a loss, against SU fresh in their minds, maybe just getting a win is a key step forward. Back-to-back home games on the short Saturday-Monday turnaround against Marquette and Louisville await the Hoyas, so getting some confidence with a win could put the the Hoyas in position to make one last run at the NCAA Tournament.

The Bulls are led by sophomore Dominique Jones and senior Jesus Verdejo. However, lack of depth upfront and overall Big East-level talent is still making life tough on the Bulls in this conference. The upset over Marquette was a great lift to their spirits, but the truth remains, USF is just 1-9 in the Big East against teams not-named DePaul. Maybe it is progress to know there is at least one team clearly below you (Rutgers might be as well), but the gap between the bottom of the conference and the rest of theleague remains a wide one.

Georgetown is a 6 1/2-point favorite on the road. While they are certainly the better team based on individual talent, the question is can co-exist together and accept roles that allow the team to become better. Tonight might be a case of taking out some frustrations, but in the games ahead, they have opportunity, but must come together much better.

BIG EAST GAME PREVIEW: SOUTH FLORIDA @ NOTRE DAME

February 15, 2009

The frustrations of seven consecutive losses were unleashed in a perfect storm Thursday night as Notre Dame blasted Louisville, 90-57, at the Joyce Center in South Bend. With the perimeter shots falling and Luke Harangody finding room inside for an efficient 32-point effort, the Irish blew the Cards right out of the building from the get-go.

With confidence restored, the Irish will look to start a revival of a season gone awry on Sunday afternoon when South Florida visits South Bend. The Bulls are 3-8 in conference play, just one-game behind the Irish, who are 4-7. USF is coming off a 15-point home loss to Providence last week. They have won once on the road in conference play, at DePaul, and a fourth conference win would be their most since joining the Big East.

Here are some pregame stories and previews found on today’s game:

Notre Dame Preview Capsule (Post-Tribune)
Tyrone Nash Searching for Consistency for Notre Dame (Chicago Tribune)

Even the big win over Louisville probably has not emptied the tank of frustrations that have built up for the Irish, who were ranked among the top 10 in the nation before a seven-game losing streak set in. The key for the Irish is to get offensive production from others to open the paint for Luke Harangody, who should find plenty of opportunities against a small and thin USF front line.

If Kyle McAlarney is hitting from the outside, it energizes the home crowd and extends the defense. Add in a few a threes from Ryan Ayers and a solid floor game from Tory Jackson and that is the Irish squad we expected in the preseason. That team showed, for the first time in quite some time, in the win over Louisville. As a 13-point home favorite, will it come again on Sunday?

The Bulls have a solid backcourt, led by dynamic scoring guard in sophomore Dominique Jones and senior Jesus Verdejo. They will have opportunities to score against the Irish defense, which is not very stout, but can the Bulls keep up offensively? Probably not…

BULLS STILL CAN'T WIN BACK-TO-BACK IN BIG EAST

February 11, 2009

South Florida had hoped to build some momentum after their stunning 57-56 upset over Marquette last Friday night when they welcomed Providence into the Sun Dome Tuesday night for a Big East conference match-up. Instead, USF Crashes to Earn, Falls to Providence (Tampa Tribune) 77-62.

The Bulls Momentum Disappears Quickly Yet Again (Tampa Tribune) as USF fails to win back-to-back Big East games for the first time in their 61-game history of Big East play. The Bulls' lack of depth, PC's bench outscored USF's 35-6, lack of inside muscle, guard Dominique Jones was the USF leading rebounder with 8 and lack of overall shot-making ability, the Bulls were 5-16 from the foul-line and 3-19 from three-point range, all came front and center as USF Deflates in Home Loss to Providence (St. Pete Times).

The Friars snap a three-game losing streak as Providence Romps at South Florida (Providence Journal) behind the strength of their 51% shooting from the field. After USF cut the lead to 62-57 with 4:15 to go, a 13-2 run by PC put the game out of reach.

Jonathan Kale had a team-high 15 points along with 9 rebounds for PC and Randall Hanke and Marshon Brooks each scored 14 off the bench. Sharaud Curry added 11 points in the win.

Dominique Jones, the sophomore USF guard, was the lone brightspot for the Bulls, scoring a game-high 29 points and grabbing a team-high 8 rebounds. Outside of his effort, his teammates combined to shoot 15-45 from the field, 0-11 from three-point range and 3-13 from the free-throw line.

The Bulls, 3-8 in Big East play, head to South Bend on Sunday to face Notre Dame.

BIG EAST GAME PREVIEW: PROVIDENCE @ SOUTH FLORIDA

February 10, 2009

After knocking off Marquette on Friday night, South Florida will look to make it two in a row and win a school-best fourth Big East conference game in a season when they host Providence in the Sun Dome on Tuesday night. The Bulls are 3-7 in the Big East, besides the upset of the Golden Eagles, USF has two wins over hapless DePaul in league play.

Providence has lost three straight games, falling to 6-5 in the Big East. The three consecutive losses followed a streak of three wins that had Friar fans thinking NCAA Tournament just a bit. Now, they need to right the ship quickly as a tough stretch of games will close out their Big East schedule. PC is coming off an 86-59 drubbing at West Virginia.

Here are some pregame stories and previews found on the internet this morning:

Bulls Eager to Take Next Step (Tampa Tribune)
Providence Probably Biggest Game of the Season (Tampa Tribune)
Friars have No Time for Sun at South Florida (Providence Journal)
PC Needs to Shake Slump (Providence-Journal)
Capsule Preview: PC at South Florida (Providence Journal)

This is a tough one to predict. The Friars looked absolutely horrendous at West Virginia this past weekend and in their last five games they have allowed over 92 points a game. While their offense continues to score at an impressive clip, winning on the road requires defense and rebounding, they will need to have that tonight if they are to run with the Bulls and escape alive.

The Bulls got a great lift from their win over Marquette on Friday, surviving a 57-56 slugfest as both teams had trouble scoring points. While they will find scoring a little easier against PC, the Bulls still have trouble as a team scoring the basketball. USF is led by Dominique Jones and Jesus Verdejo on the wings and they will put pressure on their Providence counterparts to work on defense. Keno Davis has the personnel to match-up with the Bulls’ strengths, they just need to dedicate themselves to getting it done on defense in order to win on the road in the Big East.

I like how the Friars match-up with the Bulls. They have some height inside, which might be knocked at times for playing soft (Randall Hanke), but USF is not going to overpower anyone in the Big East in the paint. Frosh Gus Gilchrist likes to take his game away from the basket and PC’s Geoff McDermott is more than comfortable in following him out there and strong and athletic enough to still battle inside.

The oddsmakers list this one as a pick-em, while PC certainly has their share of flaws, they will get the job done with a more intense defensive effort and the ability to score will serve them well in getting past USF on the road tonight.

USF STUNS NO. 8 MARQUETTE

February 7, 2009

The weekend started early with a Stunner as USF Topples No. 8 Marquette (Tampa Tribune) Friday night at South Florida. The Bulls Upset the Golden Eagles, 57-56 (St. Pete Times), handing Marquette their first loss in conference play this year after starting 9-0 in Big East play.

Jesus Verdejo scored 21 points and Dominique Jones added 15, including the go-ahead basket in the final 30 seconds as USF withstood attempts by Wesley Mathews and Lazer Hayward to win it for Marquette.

The Bulls Snap MU's 12-Game Winning Streak (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) as Marquette can make just 10-23 shots from foul line and a dismal 4-24 from the three-point arc.

Jerel McNeal scored a game-high 22 for the Golden Eagles before fouling out in the last minute. Hayward had a game-high 14 rebounds, including a rebound off of Mathews (11 points) last second miss, but he was unable to convert at point-blank range and MU went down, giving Stan Heath his biggest win as the USF head coach.

BIG EAST GAME PREVIEW: SOUTH FLORIDA HOSTS MARQUETTE

February 6, 2009

A Friday night special for the Big East tonight as Marquette heads south to take on the South Florida Bulls in a conference match-up. The Golden Eagles, under first-year head coach Buzz Williams are 9-0 in the Big East and riding a 12-game winning streak. Their last loss occurred in the Big East-SEC Challenge when they lost to Tennessee, 80-68.

The Bulls have lost three in a row and are now 2-7 in the Big East. The lone USF wins in the conference have come against DePaul. In their last game, South Florida was trounced, 65-48, by St. John's on the road and now face the hottest team in the Big East.

Here are some pregame stories and previews found on the internet this morning:

Men's Basketball Preview: Marquette vs. South Florida (Appleton Post-Crescent)
USF Bulls vs. No. 8 Marquette (St. Petersburg Times)
USF Hopes Break Helps as Big East Play Resumes (Tampa Tribune)
Game 23: South Florida (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel)

While tougher games lie ahead for Marquette, the Golden Eagles continue to gain momentum and confidence as they run through the first half of the Big East schedule. Led by the senior trio of Jerel McNeal, Wesley Mathews and Dominic James and the productive junior forward Lazar Hayward, Marquette has a foursome as good as anyone, possibly, in the country. College basketball is geared towards a guard's game, and MU has a tremendous mix of experience and talent in their backcourt, a coach's dream.

The obvious weakness for Marquette is depth and size. Those shortcomings will be tested greatly in games ahead, but against South Florida that is unlikely to haunt MU. The Bulls are also top-heavy in the backcourt, led by sophomore Dominique Jones, one of the league's top scorers. The Bulls lack depth and size in the frontcourt as well and they will be unable to take advantage of Marquette's expected weakness, too.

The latest college basketball odds have Marquette as a 9 1/2-point road favorite. A couple seasons ago, MU barely escaped South Florida with a win as McNeal made a steal and lay-up just ahead of the buzzer for a win, so MU knows they need to be ready to play. With their senior guards, I expect them to be ready.

BIG EAST GAME PREVIEW: BULLS HOPE TO WEAKEN 'STORM

February 1, 2009

The final Big East match-up on this Super Bowl Sunday has South Florida, getting away from all the big game excitement at home to travel north to meet St. John's in a conference match-up.

Each team comes into the game with 2-6 conference records. The Redstorm own home wins over Notre Dame and Rutgers, whole USF has swept two games from pitiful DePaul.

The Bulls are led by the one-two punch of shooting guard Dominique Jones and emerging freshman big man Augustus Gilchrist.

Jones, a junior, averages a team-high 18.4 points a game, leads the team with Gilchrist at 4.9 rebounds a contest, and also leads the team in assists (4.0) and steals (1.6). Gilchrist is averaging just over 12 points a game in Big East play.

St. John's has been decimated by injury, losing Anthony Mason Jr for the season in November and have been without point guard Malik Boothe and forward Rob Thomas lately. The Redstorm still plays hard under coach Norm Roberts and give a little extra effort in the comfy confines of Carnesecca Arena.

Paris Horne has been on a tear for SJU, eclipsing 20 points in three of his last four games and DJ Kennedy does a little bit of everything as a point-forward in their attack. If SJU can get Justin Burrell going against the thin USF front line, SJU will be in good shape today. St. John's is a slight home favorite (-2 1/2), they should be a winner in a pretty good game.
